Intel IQ: Research scientist Tawny Schlieski talks about the augmented and virtual reality of The Leviathan Project, which she and her team are showing at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The project brings to the virtual reality screen the visual world of Scott Westerfield’s “Leviathan” trilogy of young-adult steampunk novels. In the story, World War I is reimagined with fantastic imagery as a global conflict between the allied powers of Britain, France and Russia benefiting not from an earlier industrial revolution but a gentic revolution. They develop new creatures and manipulate DNA for industrial and military purposes as opposed to creating machines. In the novel the Leviathan is a whale-like biological flying warship. Schlieski is part of Intel’s Experience Group where she studies new technologies and their impact on storytelling and creativity.

Leviathan VR Sundance

I teamed up once again with Alex McDowell and the talented teams from Wondros, Intel, USC, and Unity3D to help recreate the Leviathan project for an exhibit at Sundance 2016. I created an augmented reality (AR) mobile app that allows the guest to take selfies with 3D virtual characters from the Leviathan world. The app uses an AR library to see markers that unlock unique characters called Huxleys. The Huxleys are rendered by Unity3D over the camera feed and have some fun touch interactions. The guest can then take a picture and post to Instagram to remember and promote the experience. The app was released in the App Store and Google Play for Sundance attendees.
